I took the ferry out of Hamburg once, and in once too! It was a magnificent route. Sailing into Cuxhaven was never quite the same so after that I did Dover Calais, then the drive. The drive time given here of 6h55 is not realistic unless driving at night- the Ruhrgebiet gets very busy!!!

I recently travelled on the high speed ferry to and from ireland and while i could not fault the service I would like to complain about the choice of dvd that was played on the return journey to troon on a sunday night on the 5.30 Sailing. There were a lot of young children and young scouts of both sexes and many parents would have been happy to have a relaxing trip while watching a suitable film for this age group even cartoons but what did they get? "The invention of liying" a flop movie with Ricky Gervais . The language was disgusting with swear words and explicit sexual words and feel parents were let down as two hours or more is a long time to keep children amused. So maybe a little thought when selecting movies would not go amiss and adults travelling without children will have a "quieter" trip

Yes its a shame I remember travelling this route. The next day I recall seeing such beautiful scenery as the ferry travelled along. I guess it could not compete with the low cost airlines.

I've actually used both ferries and they are so different.

Whilst the ramsgate ferry is nice enough on-board, it still feels like you are travelling. When I took the Hull Zeebrugge ferry, the crossing was actually a really fun part of the holiday, rather than feeling like you were travelling, I was able to relax, have a nice dinner, a few drinks on board and then a good nights sleep.

I loved the Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry, it made travelling part of the holiday. Nice food on board and we had some great entertainment, plus a good nights sleep.

I think it made our trip to Germany all the better and more exciting than just flying.

This is an interesting site and is very useful in bringing the 3 ferry companies together in one place.
I have travelled with them all although the Stena Line one was some time ago.
The DFDS service is ok but involves a 150 mile trip from where I live. The upside is that it is excellent for North Holland when going to Ijmuiden (the Amsterdam destination is a bit misleading as that is further on and requires a car/coach/high speed ferry along the Noordzeekanal)
As a vegetarian I found that the Blue Riband restaurant offered the best value because you could order what you wanted and only pay for the food ordered. The presentation, quality and amounts were first class.
The buffet style 7 Seas restaurant is ok if you can eat anything and lots of it!
P&O is my favourite as it sails from Hull which is not too far away and goes to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
The 4 Seasons buffet restaurant is excellent and has a good variety of vegetarian meals and I have not yet tried the other restaurant.
The Stena trip is the shortest at 6 hours but it takes me 4 hours to get there and it is not easy finding something to do for 6 hours.

After dealing with Heathrow, Luton and Stansted airports for far too long, the ferry to Denmark made travelling fun again. It was so much less hassle and stress than flying and was actually exciting sailing over to Denmark.

The DFDS ferry is not a cruise, so not quite as grand as an ocean liner but your only on the boat for 1 night each leg. The cabins were basic but clean with an en suite and actually a rather comfy bed. I travelled with my wife and 2 grown up children, so the 4 bed cabin was quite cramped, but it was just for sleeping in, the rest of the time you can spend relaxing just about any where else on the ship.

I loved it and will do it again!

Zeebrugge has easy connections to Bruges which is just a beautiful city with it's canals and mediaeval architecture. There are enough hotels in Bruges to cater for all tastes and budgets. The ferry is an ideal way to visit this lovely city.
