Aalborg
The ancient city Aalborg has been made famous as the location where Viking ships once sailed past on the Limfjord. Today it is seen as a cultural hotspot with iconic architecture and a rejuvenated waterfront.
At Lindholm Høje, you will see one of Scandinavia’s best preserved Viking burial sites. This burial site is marked by stone circles covering an entire hillside. The site was so well preserved due to deforestation in the area. This lead to huge sand drifts covering the area in sand and thus protecting all the burial stones. At the museum you will discover what life was like as a Viking, see artefacts and see how life has changed over the years. A great day out for people of all ages.
If food is more your thing, then why not check out Aalborg permanent Street Food Market (Køkkenfabrikken). It is located in the old furniture factory. The market has a mix of local food and gastronomic treats, as well as coffee shops and cafes. It’s goal is to create an oasis, where quality and atmosphere are the framework for a good meal out.
Architecture
One thing that goes unnoticed within the city is the striking architecture which is dotted across the waterfront. The impressive Utzon Center was designed by the famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon (designed the Sydney Opera House). The center hosts different exhibits throughout the year and presents sketches and designs by Jørn Utzon. It also displays art, architecture and design, completely inspired by Jørn Utzon’s work.
If you fancy a more relaxing day, why not just stroll around the city. Aalborg is a wonderful mix of the old and the new. Cosy little side streets with cobbled stones and colourful buildings and modern day striking architecture. It also has over 50 colourful pieces of street art dotted around the city. Therefore this would be perfect for a little self led walking tour.
