Marseille

Marseille is a port city in southern France, located on the Mediterranean coast near the mouth of the river Rhône. As a matter of fact, it is the second largest city in France. Not to mention, the largest port for commerce, freight and cruise ships in France.

Obviously, no trip to the city would be complete without exploring its wonderful port. Marseille’s massive rectangular port has been trading for 2,600 years. It’s broad promenade is enclosed mostly 18th century former warehouses which nowadays house an array of bars, cafes and restaurants.

Towering above the skyline of the port, on Marseilles highest point is the popular Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. This iconic monument with large golden figure watches over all who enter and exit the port. As a matter of fact, its one of the most visited sites in the city. It offers 360 degree, uninterrupted, panoramic views of this beautiful city.

If you are struggling to get your head around the cities history, why not check out one of its museums. The Musée d’Histoire de Marseille is located at the port. It details the architectural fragments, the remains of ancient ships and mosaics that are associated with the city. Travelling to Marseille by Ferry

Marseilles is positioned on the southern coast of France. There is not a direct ferry from the UK to Marseille. You will need to sail to one of the northern French ports. From here is will be a scenic drive through the French countryside and onto theMarseille region.
