Vehicle Boarding Information
Travelling by ferry with your car, van, motorhome, or motorcycle gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.
However, if it’s your first time boarding a ferry with a vehicle, it’s natural to have a few questions. While the process is straightforward, each ferry operator has their own specific procedures, from check-in times to loading instructions.
In general, you’ll be asked to arrive at the port between 60 and 90 minutes before departure. Make sure you have your booking reference, travel documents, and any vehicle details ready. When you arrive, you’ll pass through a check-in booth where staff will provide lane instructions. From there, simply follow the signs and marshal directions as you’re guided onto the ship.
Onboard, vehicles are parked securely in designated lanes, often with the handbrake on and in gear (or ‘park’ for automatics). You’ll usually be asked to turn off your alarm and avoid locking with motion-sensitive systems. It’s important to bring everything you need for the crossing with you to the passenger deck, as you won’t be able to return to your vehicle during the journey.
Different ferry companies may have different policies for electric vehicles, gas bottles, or extra-long vans, so it’s best to check the latest guidelines directly with your operator. For your convenience, we’ve created links to each provider’s official boarding advice below:
