Holland

Holland

After France and Ireland, Holland is the third most popular destination with UK ferry travellers. Despite what you may think, it is actually not that big a country, but they do manage to cram a lot in.

Just about every town and city in Holland can be reached within a 2 hour drive no matter where you are, even a drive from the north west tip of the Netherlands to the south east takes just over 3 hours.

Where to visit

Holland may be small, but it’s one of Europe’s most cultural and cosmopolitan countries with possibly the nicest people in the World. Clogs, windmills and Amsterdam will be on most people top three words to describe Holland, but it’s so much more than this.

Culture in Holland is everywhere, museums and galleries are brimming over with works by the great Dutch masters, like Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt. If you venture away from the big cities, you’ll see that Dutch tradition maintains its grip on the small villages and towns and if your lucky you’ll see national costume still worn for special occasions.

Amsterdam is usually top of many travellers itinerary, but if it’s the city life that thrills you, then some time in Rotterdam is a must, Hollands second largest city and former European Capital of Culture is a bustling city with one of Europe’s most impressive skyline’s and busiest ports. The Hague (or Den Hagg as it’s called in Dutch) is Holland’s other major city, this is the centre of all things to do with the government and contains much of the historic architecture from the medieval, renaissance, and Baroque periods. All three cities have many things to see and do. Read more on each in one of our guides.
