Ferry from Stranraer to Ireland
Searching for a ferry from Stranraer to Ireland? It’s a common request, Stranraer was once a key departure point for ferries to Northern Ireland.
However, this route no longer exists. Ferry services were moved a few miles north to Cairnryan to accommodate larger vessels and provide improved port facilities.
Luckily, the journey from Stranraer to Ireland is still very straightforward. Simply drive 7 miles north to Cairnryan—a journey that takes about 15 minutes. From there, you have two excellent ferry options:
- Cairnryan to Larne – Operated by P&O Ferries, this route offers multiple daily sailings for both foot passengers and vehicles. The crossing takes just over two hours and provides a direct route into County Antrim.

- Cairnryan to Belfast – Operated by Stena Line, this popular route also runs several times a day, offering modern onboard facilities and convenient access to Northern Ireland’s capital city.

Both routes are reliable, scenic, and serve as the modern replacements for the old Stranraer crossings. Cairnryan has become the main terminal for ferries from southwest Scotland to Ireland, offering upgraded ships and smoother check-in processes.
So while a direct Stranraer to Ireland ferry no longer runs, Cairnryan offers two excellent alternatives.
