Why Travel to the Ryder Cup by Ferry?
Flying isn’t your only option for reaching Ireland. For visitors travelling from Great Britain, taking a ferry can work particularly well for the Ryder Cup.
🚗 Take your own car
Having your car in Ireland gives you much more freedom. You can choose accommodation outside Adare and travel towards the event transport hubs each day. You can also explore more of Ireland before or after the tournament.
🧳 Bring more luggage
A Ryder Cup trip could easily turn into a week-long holiday.
Travelling with your vehicle means you can pack for a longer stay without worrying about airline baggage allowances.
⛳ Bring your golf clubs
Fancy playing a round yourself while you’re in Ireland? Travelling by car and ferry makes bringing your golf clubs much easier. Keep them packed in the vehicle and add your own golf day to the trip.
🗺️ Turn the Ryder Cup into an Irish road trip
You don’t need to head straight home after the final putt. County Limerick provides a great starting point for exploring Ireland’s west coast. You could extend your stay and make the Ryder Cup part of a longer Irish road trip.
Best Ferry Routes for the Ryder Cup 2027
There are several ferry routes between Great Britain and Ireland. The best crossing will depend on where you start your journey and how much driving you want to do on either side of the Irish Sea.
Best for: Travellers from North Wales, North West England and the Midlands.
Holyhead to Dublin is one of the main ferry routes between Great Britain and Ireland. Once you arrive in Dublin, you can travel west towards Limerick and Adare by road. This route can be a useful choice if reaching Holyhead is straightforward from your part of Britain.
Route: Holyhead → Dublin → Adare
Best for: Travellers from South Wales and parts of western England.
Travelling from Fishguard to Rosslare puts you in south-east Ireland. From Rosslare, you can continue across southern Ireland towards County Limerick. This can be a particularly useful route if you are starting your journey in Wales or western England.
Route: Fishguard → Rosslare → Adare
Best for: Travellers from South Wales and South West England.
Pembroke provides another option for reaching Rosslare. After arriving in Ireland, continue towards County Limerick by road. Compare both Welsh departure ports when planning your trip, as the most convenient option will depend on your starting point and preferred sailing time.
Route: Pembroke → Rosslare → Adare
Which Ferry Route Should You Choose?
There isn’t one ferry route that will suit every Ryder Cup visitor.
If you live in northern England, the Midlands or North Wales, travelling through Holyhead and Dublin could make sense. If you are travelling from South Wales or South West England, a crossing to Rosslare may provide a more convenient journey. Don’t compare the ferry crossing alone.
Look at the complete journey from your home to your accommodation in Ireland. A slightly longer ferry crossing or drive in Britain could result in a much easier overall journey.
Driving to County Limerick
Once you arrive in Ireland, you can continue towards County Limerick by road. If you arrive in Dublin, your journey will take you west across Ireland towards Limerick. Travellers arriving at Rosslare will approach County Limerick from the south-east.
Allow plenty of time for the journey, particularly during Ryder Cup week. A major international sporting event will bring large numbers of visitors into the area. It may also be worth arriving a day or two before your first planned day at the tournament. This gives you more time to settle into your accommodation and familiarise yourself with the area.
Getting to Adare Manor During the Ryder Cup
Having your own car will be useful for reaching County Limerick, but don’t plan on simply driving to the entrance of Adare Manor. Official Ryder Cup transport plans include Park & Ride locations around Adare. Dedicated shuttle buses will then take spectators towards the venue.
Shuttle journeys from these locations are expected to take around 10 to 30 minutes. Public transport will also play an important role. Shuttle services are planned from Limerick Junction and Limerick Colbert railway stations.
More detailed transport arrangements are expected closer to the event. Always check the official Ryder Cup travel information before setting off.
Where Should You Stay for the Ryder Cup?
Accommodation is likely to be one of the biggest considerations when planning your trip. You don’t necessarily need to stay in Adare itself. Having your own car allows you to consider accommodation across a much wider area.
Limerick
Limerick is an obvious base for the tournament. It gives you access to a large city while keeping you relatively close to Adare and the official event transport network.
Around County Limerick
Smaller towns and rural accommodation around County Limerick could also work well. This is where having your own vehicle becomes particularly useful.
Further afield
If accommodation close to Adare becomes limited, you could consider staying further away and driving towards an official Park & Ride location. However, remember that you’ll need to make the journey on every day you attend the event.
Always check the latest official transport arrangements before booking accommodation based purely on driving distance.
Make the Ryder Cup Part of a Longer Ireland Trip
One of the biggest advantages of taking the ferry is the opportunity to turn your visit into a longer holiday. Rather than travelling directly to the Ryder Cup and straight home again, add a few extra days to explore Ireland.
You could spend time around Limerick, head towards Ireland’s Atlantic coast or include another destination on your journey back towards the ferry port. And, of course, golfers might want to squeeze in a round themselves. Taking your own car makes it much easier to build a flexible itinerary around the tournament.
Taking Golf Clubs to Ireland by Ferry
Planning to play golf while you’re in Ireland? Travelling by ferry makes taking your own clubs straightforward, particularly if you’re travelling with a vehicle. Pack your clubs securely inside your car before boarding.
Remember that passengers normally cannot access the vehicle deck while the ferry is at sea. Take anything you need during the crossing with you before leaving your vehicle. You can read more about the boarding process in our Travelling by Ferry with a Vehicle guide.
When Should You Book Your Ferry?
The Ryder Cup is one of the biggest events in international golf. Therefore, don’t leave your travel arrangements until the last minute. Ferry crossings, vehicle spaces and accommodation can become busier around major events.
Once you know which days you’re attending, start comparing your ferry options. Consider travelling to Ireland before your first tournament day and returning after the busiest departure period. That can also give you the opportunity to enjoy more of Ireland during your trip.
