Ferry from Belfast to Stranraer
Many people still search for a ferry from Belfast to Stranraer, and it’s easy to see why. For many years, this was one of the key routes linking Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland.
However, this service no longer exists. The crossing was moved to nearby Cairnryan to accommodate larger ships and benefit from upgraded port facilities.
Today, the best way to complete this journey is to take the ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan, operated by Stena Line. This route runs several times daily and welcomes both foot passengers and vehicles. The sailing takes just over two hours and offers a comfortable journey with modern onboard amenities.

Once you arrive in Cairnryan, it’s just a short drive to Stranraer, approximately 7 miles or 15 minutes by car. The road is well signposted and offers scenic views along the coast. Although the ferry no longer docks in Stranraer, Cairnryan now serves as the main terminal for crossings to and from Northern Ireland.
So, while a direct Belfast to Stranraer ferry no longer operates, the Cairnryan route is its modern and efficient replacement.
