Looking for a ferry from Ireland to Stranraer? You’re not alone, Stranraer was once a well-known port for crossings between Northern Ireland and Scotland.
However, the route was permanently moved a short distance north to Cairnryan to accommodate larger vessels and more modern port facilities.
These days, ferries from Northern Ireland no longer dock in Stranraer. Instead, you’ll arrive at Cairnryan, which is just 7 miles away. The drive from Cairnryan to Stranraer takes around 15 minutes and is clearly signposted, making for an easy onward journey.
You have two excellent ferry options when travelling from Ireland:
- Larne to Cairnryan – Operated by P&O Ferries, this service offers several crossings daily and accommodates both foot passengers and vehicles. It’s a great choice if you’re travelling from County Antrim or surrounding areas.

- Belfast to Cairnryan – Run by Stena Line, this route also offers frequent daily sailings and is ideal if you’re departing from Belfast or further afield.

Both options bring you directly to Cairnryan, from where you can easily continue your journey to Stranraer or beyond. These upgraded routes offer modern ships, comfortable facilities, and shorter boarding times compared to the older Stranraer service.
So, although a direct ferry from Ireland to Stranraer no longer operates, Cairnryan now serves as the primary gateway between Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland.
