Ferry from Larne to Troon in Scotland
The Larne to Troon ferry route once provided a fast and efficient link between Northern Ireland and the west coast of Scotland.
Operated by P&O Ferries. This service was particularly popular in the summer months, offering a shorter crossing time compared to other routes. However, the service was permanently discontinued in 2016, with all sailings consolidated through the nearby port of Cairnryan.
Alternative Routes
Although you can no longer sail directly from Larne to Troon, several reliable alternatives remain. The most direct replacement is the Larne to Cairnryan ferry, which continues to operate year-round with multiple daily sailings. This route takes around two hours and is well-suited to both passenger vehicles and freight.
Cairnryan lies just over an hour’s drive south of Troon. Meaning that for many travellers, the change adds only a small adjustment to their journey. The route to Troon is straightforward via the A77 and A78, with scenic views along the Ayrshire coastline.
On the Scottish side, services are also available from Belfast to Cairnryan, operated by Stena Line. Belfast and Larne are roughly 30 minutes apart by road, giving travellers some flexibility in choosing their departure point.
